I’m guessing it’s an older style battery that they’re trying to phase out, but I’d also assume that it’s to drive more buyers to the Model 3 for near-term production targets and/ or greater margins at the top of that line. The cheapest Model S and X will now be $94k and $97k, respectively. The 75 D could be had for $76k. Eighteen thousand dollars is quite a lot for a 27% larger “gas tank”. The optioned out Model 3 is $70.5k, while the base, no option (vaporware?) one is $44k. That’s 20 grand plus between the top of the line 3 and the cheapest S - a lot of real estate to give up in the luxury car market. T he Model Y will surely slot in there nicely; I wonder if a 2nd gen Model S is coming soon, as well.

I would hope that they are looking at a next gen Model S, But if they were smart they would move straight to the next gen Model X or a model 3 based crossover.

Sounds like the Model Y will run about $5k more than a similarly equipped 3. Still leaves a big hole.

It’s to push sales for the 75 Model S. All the people on the fence need to order NOW NOW NOW to still get an S, and not have to run with the plebeian 3s

Seems crazy, but giving people just 4 days to make a decision would definitely motivate a few who have been waiting.

It’s to simplify production.

It does do that. I wonder how few of them they were selling to feel confident enough to make this change.

I’m grasping at some old memory cells, but when they used to sell the Model S 60, didn’t it have the same battery as the S 75, but software restricted to 60kwh? The take rate was probably low and this means they only need to produce one pack for the S and X.

I don’t remember. According to electrek, the 3 Long Range is ~74 kWh and the Mid-Range is 62 kWh (both use the same battery pack architecture).

Nah, the “base” Model Y will “start” at $30,000.
WHAT A DEAL.
